All Saints’ Deacon’s Cupboard (Food Bank)

Drop off food bank donations on
Saturday, June 17, 1-3pm
in the parking lot north of the church on Centre St.
(Please note Centre Street is one-way southbound.)

All Saints’ Deacon’s Cupboard ministry is a source of food for members of our community.  It is our way of being church and showing the love of God to our neighbours so that everyone can have their daily bread and know of the provision of the Lord.

Food can be dropped off at the church parking lot between 1- 3 PM on the third Saturday of every month. We will have volunteers unloading your car and taking the food supplies into the Deacon’s Cupboard space at the church.

Donations of the following items are in demand:

canned pasta, canned soups, cereal, Saltine crackers, cookies, canned tuna fish, canned sardines, canned tomatoes, instant coffee, canned kidney beans, Kraft Dinner, peanut butter and personal hygiene products for men and women (e.g., soap, shampoo, razors, deodorant and, toilet paper).

All Saints’ is a member of Feed the Need in Durham (FTND). Weekly orders from FTND help sustain and further develop our food supply for those who come in increasing numbers to the Deacon’s Cupboard each week.

To learn more about the Deacons’ Cupboard (food bank), please contact Gary Gannon, (905) 668-6069 (H) or at garygannon24@nullgmail.com.

Deacon Gary’s Thought and Prayer

Thursday, May 11
Debbie and I have become avid watchers of the Antiques Roadshow (British version). Tired of the litany of troubling local news programming at dinner time, we have tuned in to BBC First most evenings to watch this wonderful show. One broadcast, on British endurance in the early years of WW II, caught my attention in regards to the bombing of the city of Coventry and the significant destruction of that city’s cathedral on the night of November 14, 1940.

Some months ago, in another Thought and Prayer for the Day, I wrote about my desire to one day take a cathedral tour in England. While this dream is still to happen, a visit to Coventry Cathedral will be one stop for me to experience. In watching the BBC program, I learned about the “Coventry Cross.”

In the days that followed the November 14th bombing, two powerful symbols emerged from the ruined cathedral. Two burnt roof beams – which had fallen in the shape of a cross in the rubble – were bound together and placed where the altar had been. Three medieval roof nails were formed into a cross, which became the original Cross of Nails. The words ‘Father Forgive’ were written on the wall of the ruined chancel. At the time, Provost Dick Howard made a commitment not to seek revenge, but to strive for forgiveness and reconciliation with those responsible.

During the BBC radio broadcast from the cathedral ruins on Christmas Day 1940, Howard declared that when the war was over, we should work with those who had been enemies “to build a kinder, more Christ-like world.” The Cross of Nails quickly became a potent sign of friendship and hope in the post-war years. This was especially true in relationships with Germany, and the developing links between Coventry and the cities of Kiel, Dresden and Berlin. Since then, the new cathedral, rebuilt next to the ruins, has become a centre for peace-making and reconciliation around the world. The partnerships that emerged from the war became the international Community of the Cross of Nails, which continues to grow globally to this day. If your are interested in learning more about this community, I invite you to visit their website Community of the Cross of Nails – Coventry Cathedral.

The three guiding principles of this group are very relevant in our 21st century world, particularly as Canadians. These principles include “Healing the wounds of history, Learning to live with difference and celebrate diversity, and Building a culture of justice and peace.” As Christians, we can look no further than in Matthew’s gospel (Matthew 5:43–44) where our Lord sets out his expectations for us as his disciples; “You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall love your neighbour and hate your enemy. But I say to you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you.” I encourage you to watch a very moving short video from Coventry Cathedral hosted by Archbishop Justin Welby. The Cross of Nails | The Archbishop of Canterbury .

Prayer

Lord, make us instruments of your peace. Where there is hatred let us show love;
where there is injury, pardon; where there is discord, union; where there is doubt, faith;
where there is despair, hope; where there is darkness, light; where there is sadness, joy.
Grant that we may not so much seek to be consoled as to console; to be understood as to understand; to be loved as to love. For it is in giving that we receive; it is in pardoning that we are pardoned; and it is in dying that we are born to eternal life. Amen

Chancel Guild Help Wanted

Chancel Guild:  If you have been looking for an opportunity to serve the church in some capacity look no further!  The Chancel Guild is looking for new members – no experience required.  The time commitment is low – one hour a month on a Saturday morning, and then some clean up duties at the service you attend that same weekend.  The Chancel Guild members provide an essential role in our worship time together, so please give this ministry some prayerful consideration.  If you want to know more please contact Pauline Reid at 905-439-4708 or at pareid@nullhotmail.com

Community Garden at All Saints

MAY 13TH AT 9 A.M. is “DIRTY SATURDAY” at the church.  Are you familiar with a shovel, can move a wheelbarrow, lift a bucket? We welcome you to help us top up our church community garden raised beds with enriched soil to prepare them for planting.

Please contact Isabelle Beaudet at jibeaudet@nulllive.com or phone 289 240 5221.

Lunch is to be provided so a confirmation of numbers is needed. Everyone is welcome!

Follow the carrots to the church hall and find out about Your All Saints’ Community Garden. Its success depends on you, so volunteer your time, provide strong tomato stakes and cages, or donate plants/seedlings for the mid-May planting. When you sign up a committee member will contact you to discuss what you can provide.

The “All Saints’ Community Garden” of 2023 will succeed with your help. Here’s how:

  • PLANT SEEDLINGS of cucumber, zucchini, tomato, basil, parsley or peppers, at home, for planting in Mid-May. Contact Isabelle Beaudet, jibeaudet@nulllive.com, for seeds.

Blessing of the Garden:

Eternal Father, maker of heaven and earth, we bless you and give you glory for all the gifts you have given us. Receive all we offer you this day. Bless these seeds, and make them fruitful. Look upon our work this season, and grant that the seeds we plant will produce plentiful crops, providing food and work for many. In your love, give us favorable weather throughout this growing season. Make us truly grateful for all our gifts, and willing to share our goods and talents with others, especially those without adequate food. All praise and glory are yours, almighty Father, through your Son Jesus Christ, In the unity of the Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

Three Sisters Garden Awakening Prayer:

Creator, thank you for bringing us to this beautiful garden today. Over time, you have brought each one of us along our own separate paths to have us finally gather here today for the same purpose. To honour the ways of past generations of the first peoples on this land, and how they grew their food, we are gathered here to plant a Three Sisters Garden in the way of the Haudenosaunee.

Creator, we thank you for the many blessings you have given us these many years.
We thank Mother Earth for providing us this land to plant our food.
We thank Grandfather Sun for the warm rays sent down to grow our food.
We thank Grandmother Rain for bathing our food with soft summer rains.
Creator, we offer sacred tobacco in thankfulness for your generosity.
Marsee, Miigwetch, Amen
