November 8 is Indigenous Veterans Day, honouring the service and sacrifices of First Nations, Inuit and Métis veterans. Sergeant Charles H. Byce (1916–1994), a Moose Cree soldier from Chapleau, Ontario, was Canada’s most highly decorated Indigenous soldier of the Second World War.
A residential school survivor, he earned both the Military Medal and the Distinguished Conduct Medal for bravery. Remarkably, his father, Henry, earned both medals during the First World War. Charles was also a relative of Marnee Lacey, co-founder of All Saints’ Truth & Reconciliation Team.
