Fr. Geoff’s Thought and Prayer

Thought and Prayer of the Day
by the Rev. Geoff Lloyd

August 21, 2025

One of the things I really don’t like are Bible stories made into films with men dressed in converted towels and Jewish Rabbis made up to the nines! Together with this I find the language often stilted and not genuine. I really don’t like the genre!!

So, you can imagine my surprise when my stepdaughter Ashley persuaded me to watch ‘The Chosen’.  It has all the trappings I mention above, except it has excellent dialogue and is very powerful in its depiction of Jesus and the life he shares with his disciples. The miracles he performs are highly believable, and the smiles and enjoyment of all involved afterwards is very well presented. Poetic license has also been used to expand the stories but do not deprive them of their truth and power. The Sermon on the Mount, the healing of the man at the pool, the bringing back to life of Jairus’s (the leader of the synagogue) daughter, and the encounter with the woman at the well are all well told and inspirational for the viewer. I wouldn’t normally do this, but I highly recommend the film series to you and I’m sure you will thoroughly enjoy it!

Prayer
God our Father, we thank you for sending us your son Jesus and pray that he will continue to inspire us all in deed, scripture and films like “The Chosen”. Amen.
