This week in Canada, conversion therapy was outlawed by the passing of Bill C-4, receiving unanimous support from every official in Parliament. The federal legislation to ban conversion therapy practices in Canada also received royal assent.
Conversion therapy is any attempt to change a person’s sexual orientation, gender identity, or gender expression. In the past this type of “therapy” was offered to LGBT2S+ people, both with and without consent, to try to stop or suppress their attraction to someone of the same sex, or to stop people from living as a different gender than recorded at birth. This practice caused much harm.
The passing of Bill C-4 sends a clear message to LGBTQ2S+ Canadians: you are valid and deserving of a life free from harm.
Although the law will be in place, Durham Pride has been made aware of some churches and organizations that oppose this bill and plan to defy the order. Vigilance must be maintained to support all those who identify as LGBTQ2S+
The parish of All Saints is pleased to celebrate and support the passing of Bill C-4. We affirm that God created us all, and that diversity in all forms is a gift of God. We must continue our quest as an affirming church, welcoming all through our doors.
